Failla Chuy Vineyard Chardonnay
|Region||California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley|
Planted by Chuy Ordaz in 1964, he is still farming it, today with help of the second generation. The vineyard, which sits at 1200 feet elevation and overlooks Sonoma Valley, produces some of the most complex, layered Chardonnay in the lineup. The wine fermented with native yeast and aged 11 months in 30% Concrete Egg, 20% new French oak, and 50% neutral French oak. Small yields, courtesy of vine-age, dry-farming and the small clusters "Wente" clone is famous for, provide a wine of tremendous concentration while the intense core of natural acidity keeps this wine light on its feet. With aromatics of lime peel, shaved fennel and apple skin, the palate follows with brisk, flinty texture and firm length. This wine is beautiful now, but should continue to improve for the next decade.
